Three people were arrested after a school resource officer was kicked in the head while attempting to break up a fight at Fridley High School Thursday afternoon, police said.

The city’s police department said in a press release that officers were dispatched to the high school just after 3 p.m. on a report of a “disturbance in the parking lot.” A school resource officer (SRO) onsite had requested backup after he found several students fighting in the parking lot.

The SRO physically intervened in the fight “to prevent further bodily harm to other students and staff members.” While doing so, a bystander who wasn’t involved in the initial fight “intentionally kicked the officer in the head,” which caused “severe harm” and sent the officer to the hospital. He was in stable condition as of Thursday evening.

The suspect who kicked the officer was arrested along with two suspects involved in the original fight.

According to dispatch audio reported on by Crime Watch Minneapolis, the SRO was “out of it” after sustaining a kick to the head. Crime Watch reported that one of the female suspects was booked on one count of first-degree assault and four counts of fourth-degree assault on a police officer.
