Shots rang out Tuesday evening on the campus of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and School in Edina. It’s just the latest in a string of violent incidents the city has seen recently.

Nobody was injured in the incident, which reportedly took place about 8 p.m. outside the church on Eden Avenue near the basketball court.

Bystanders provided initial information and a video clip to Crime Watch Minneapolis, saying that a number of Somali individuals were present, car windows were shattered by gunfire in the parking lot, and that a large contingent of law enforcement had responded, including squads from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, as well as a crime lab vehicle.

Edina police eventually released a statement that said:

“Around 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 22, officers responded to the 5000 block of Eden Avenue on a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they determined shots were fired and the suspect had left the area. No injuries were reported. This remains an active investigation. If you have information or surveillance video related to this incident, please reach out to RqvanCbyvprGvcf@RqvanZA.tbi. No further updates.”

Officials at Our Lady of Grace issued a follow-up statement on Wednesday explaining that they’ve had issues with individuals using their private property without permission:

“As we continue to process the events of last evening, we want to share a few additional updates and steps we have taken and are taking to help keep our campus safe.

Our campus is private property, and throughout the summer we have worked closely with the Edina Police Department to address individuals using our property without permission. We do have signs that say ‘Private Property and No Trespassing.’ Police officers have responded to our campus on numerous occasions and have asked individuals to leave.

In light of last night’s incident, we are taking a closer look at how we can further limit unauthorized access to our property. As one part of that effort, the Edina Police Department recommended that we remove the rims and nets from our basketball hoops. We took that step today, as a way of taking immediate action. While we recognize that these hoops are enjoyed by members of our community, our priority must be creating a safe and secure environment for our students, staff, parishioners, and families.

This morning Edina Mayor, Jim Hovland, came to Our Lady of Grace to offer his support and to let us know that keeping Edina safe is a top priority for him. He will be sharing information from this incident with a metro-wide task force studying youth gangs and gun violence. We appreciate the city’s attention to this issue and its commitment to the safety of our community.

While we are mindful of the realities of the world around us, we are also reminded of the strength of the community that surrounds Our Lady of Grace. We are especially grateful today for:

  • Our partnership with the Edina Police Department, whose officers have been responsive and supportive as we work together to keep our campus safe. Further, the EPD will be placing high intensity cameras on our property, which feed directly into their EPD dispatch.
  • The OLG Men’s Club and our wonderful team of volunteers, who showed up this morning to help us prepare for the school day and care for our community.
  • NTS Security, whose additional presence and support are helping us provide an added layer of security on campus.

Last night was unsettling, and we know that events like this can cause concern for our families. Please know that we are taking this seriously, working closely with local authorities, and continually evaluating what more we can do to protect our students and staff.

Most importantly, we are grateful for the way our OLG community comes together in difficult moments. We are blessed by the people who step forward, serve, protect, pray, and care for one another.

Please continue to keep our school, parish, and entire Edina community in your prayers.”

Edina police released another statement on Wednesday afternoon indicating that the basketball players were the likely target, not the church, and that the involved parties were not affiliated with the church:

“Around 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, Edina Police responded to call of shots fired at Our Lady of Grace Church, 5071 Eden Ave.

Witnesses reported there was a group of 16- to 18-year-olds playing basketball at Our Lady of Grace when an opposing group arrived in a vehicle and began firing handguns at the basketball players. The opposing group then immediately left. Officers arrived to the scene in under a minute; there were no injuries reported.

At this time, detectives believe the basketball group was the intended target, not Our Lady of Grace. Neither groups involved in the incident appear to be affiliated with the church or school. Detectives are actively working to develop suspect descriptions.

Edina Police is working collaboratively with Our Lady of Grace staff on this case and to prevent future incidents.
