A fight at a west Bloomington high school between two students on Tuesday left one of them hospitalized with multiple stab wounds and resulted in the school going into lockdown for 90 minutes.

According to comments made by Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts in a Tuesday afternoon press conference, police responded to Bloomington Jefferson High School on a report of a fight and that one of the participants had a knife. Potts said that school staff and the liaison officer on site responded very quickly to the scene and separated the fighting parties, both identified as juvenile female students at the school, but realized that one of the parties had sustained multiple stab wounds in the altercation.

Potts said that incident had taken place in the front main hallway of the school and that the injured student had been transported to the hospital and was reported to be in stable condition at the time. Potts said that the other student had been taken into custody at the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) following the incident and that the reason for the fight was unknown.

Potts said that the school, located at the intersection of West 102nd Street and France Avenue South, had gone into lockdown following the incident and that staff had worked to keep other students safe and that there was no other threat to students as a result of the incident. Potts also said that parents had been notified about the incident. The police chief added that the scene was processed by the BPD with the help of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department.

Potts indicated that school administrators will have additional conversations about how to keep students safe and prevent future incidents saying that this incident was a “rare occurrence.” Potts declined to give any further information about the weapon used citing an ongoing investigation, and no other information about the students involved has been made available by police.
