State Rep. Erik Mortensen, R-Shakopee, wants to start impeachment proceedings against Gov. Tim Walz, according to an email sent Monday by the North Star Liberty Alliance.
The North Star Liberty Alliance (NSLA) is a grassroots organization that is working with conservative senators and representatives to start a formal impeachment process against Walz due to his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“You see, after nearly a full year of lockdowns the state is starting to turn against Walz,” said the NSLA’s email.
Rep. Mortensen is “all-in to bring these articles of impeachment to the Legislature floor and whip the votes to get it passed,” the email added.
Mortensen, who was sworn in to the Minnesota House Tuesday, has brought up the topic of impeachment at least once before. In November, he said he intends to “submit impeachment papers” against the governor.
“People’s lives have been decimated by these dictates from Gov. Walz and unfortunately there are a lot of supposed representatives in Minnesota that aren’t upholding their oaths of office or standing up for their constituents and businesses in their district,” Mortensen said at the time, according to a press release. “Not only button-pusher Democrats are protecting their party leader Walz, but also weak Republicans that refuse to hold this governor accountable for violating his oath of office and abusing his power.”
The email from the NSLA calls on Minnesotans to sign a petition supporting the impeachment of Walz, saying that “the best ‘stimulus’ for business owners would be to open the economy and let Minnesotans earn an honest living.”
Mortensen has been vocal on his opposition to the lockdowns imposed on Minnesotans by the governor.
In December, Mortensen promoted a bill that would suspend Gov. Walz’s pay until Minnesotans were allowed to go back to work. “When a Governor orders people out of work, he shouldn’t receive a paycheck either,” Mortensen said.
