Teirab campaign slams Angie Craig for ‘blatantly lying’ about his position on abortion

Teirab said he "would vote against any federal ban or restrictions on abortion" and supports exceptions.

Republican Joe Teirab is running against Democratic Congresswoman Angie Craig in Minnesota's Second Congressional District.

Republican congressional candidate Joe Teirab denounced his Democratic opponent, Rep. Angie Craig, for airing a political attack ad which he says blatantly misrepresents his stance on abortion.

“Like a typical career politician, Angie has resorted to lying about my stance on abortion because she can’t tell the truth about her failures on the economy, the border, and education,” said Teirab.

Congresswoman Angie Craig is seeking a fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her district, which encompasses much of the south metro area, is home to the most competitive congressional race in Minnesota this year. Joe Teirab, a U.S. Marine and former federal prosecutor, is Craig’s GOP challenger.

Earlier this month, Craig began airing a political attack ad in which a doctor claims Teirab wants to “make our reproductive rights go away.” Additionally, the same doctor says “Joe Teirab would let politicians ban abortion even in cases of rape, incest, and in the event that the life of the mother was at risk.”

However, the Teirab campaign says the Craig ad is “blatantly lying” about the GOP candidate’s position on abortion.

“I’ve been very clear: the federal government should not dictate to states, especially Minnesota, what their abortion policy should be,” said Teirab. “I would vote against any federal ban or restrictions on abortion, and I support exceptions.”

KSTP recently gave the Craig campaign ad a “D” rating in their “Truth Test.” According to the news outlet, a “D” rating means “at least half the information” in the ad is either “false or misleading to the point of leaving a false impression.”

“This is a deeply personal issue and it’s sad that Angie Craig would use it as a wedge to score political points,” added Teirab. “Angie’s continued lying on the issue is just a desperate attempt to distract from her own record.”

The Craig campaign told Alpha News that their ad “states that Teirab would allow politicians to ban abortion even in cases of rape, incest, and the life of the mother being at risk.”

In explaining this statement, a campaign spokesperson referenced a candidate survey conducted by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL); the state’s most prominent pro-life organization.

According to the MCCL survey, Teirab said that he would vote against any legislation that would “weaken any pro-life law or policy that is in effect” on the day he is elected, and he would vote against any federal legislation “that would place new limits on the ability of states to regulate abortion.”

The Craig campaign characterized the situation by saying “Joe Teirab has pledged to Minnesota’s largest pro-life group that he would not vote for any restrictions for abortion bans at the state level. This is a categorical answer that includes the many states that have already banned abortion without exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. Through his questionnaire answer, Teirab has pledged to leave these bans in place.”

“The campaign will continue to accurately inform voters about Teirab’s extreme position on abortion,” added the Craig spokesperson.
