A coalition of left-wing groups has made the passage of HF1500 which would allow illegal immigrants to obtain a driver license.  The bill is chief authored by Democrat majority leader Ryan Winkler. Only one Republican, Representative Rod Hamilton has signed up as co-authors.

The coalition of leftwing groups includes ISIAH, Take Action Minnesota, Jewish Community Action, SEIU Minnesota, Growth & Justice and more.

The left-wing coalition got its first win by having the bill pass in its first hearing in the Minnesota house. Democrat Governor Tim Walz has signaled that he would sign the bill.

Experts estimate that in 2017 there were over 150,000 illegal immigrants living in Minnesota. The same report estimates the total financial cost to Minnesota taxpayers is over $700,000,000

Critics argue that this legislation encourages illegal immigration and makes it tougher for law enforcement to do their job.

The legislation is expected to face obstacles in the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate.
