Today I learned that Minnesota’s largest newspaper, the Star Tribune, has joined with Alpha News in asking the Hennepin County District Court to unseal the divorce records of Keith Ellison, a candidate in the November election for Attorney General. We at Alpha News are gratified by their actions, disproving that the request was of a partisan nature. If it can be said that we lean right, it can equally be said of the Star Tribune that they lean left. The Venn diagram of those interested in transparency has grown substantially today. It seems to me that that’s the important development, one which serves the citizens of Minnesota well.
I wouldn’t presume to speak for the newspaper, but I will reiterate what we have said before. We have no idea if our request will be granted by the court nor if the documents, should they be released, will have any bearing on the abuse allegations lodged against Ellison or relevance to other, broader issues in the race for the office he seeks.
Transparency is the key here and from the perspective of this David, I’m heartened to learn Goliath agrees. My sincere hope is that other media outlets in Minnesota join us. In the meantime, thank you to the Star Tribune for doing the right thing for the right reasons.
