Two separate mass shootings in Minneapolis left at least 13 people injured by gunfire and one dead in less than 24 hours on Sunday.
Nine people were injured by gunfire in a mass shooting outside Reign Event Center in Uptown Minneapolis early Sunday morning. Another mass shooting occurred Sunday evening about two miles away in the Stevens Square neighborhood, injuring another four people and killing one.
Just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, responders were dispatched to the Reign Event Center on the 2900 block of Hennepin Avenue for a shooting, according to publicly available dispatch audio. An officer help call was also reported at the same location at the same time.
Responders eventually aired that at least four people had been injured by gunfire, including a male who was shot in the chest; others were reported to be shot in their legs.
About 10 minutes later, a male shot in the chest arrived at Abbott Hospital, according to the Minneapolis Police 911 dashboard and further emergency audio.
Minneapolis police (MPD) issued a statement later Sunday morning connecting the shootings and said a total of nine people had been shot outside Reign with four found on site, four who showed up at Abbott Hospital, and another injured party who showed up at HCMC.
MPD explained that gunfire erupted outside the club following an altercation and that officers from all five of the city’s precincts responded to assist. No arrests were made at the time.
Police said the injured parties included a 20-year-old man with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds; and a 21-year-old man, a 22-year-old woman, and a 27-year-old woman, each with apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. All four were found on site and transported by ambulance to the hospital. An 18-year-old man later walked into HCMC with an apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Four additional injured people arrived at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, including a 20-year-old man, a 21-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man with apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, and a 21-year-old man with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. The man with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds was later transferred by ambulance to HCMC.
According to social media posts, reality TV personality Ivori Babu was scheduled to make an appearance at Reign and hold a meet-and-greet at the club; she may have still been on site at the time of the shootings, according to other social media posts. Babu later posted on Instagram, “& this is tf why I don’t go outside of my home they just shot my booking up with a switch bye never again.”
Second mass shooting
On Sunday night at about 8:20 p.m., responders were dispatched to a storefront on the 1800 block of Nicollet Avenue for at least two people initially reported to be shot.
MPD later said in a statement that four injured men were located at the scene, including a 43-year-old man with apparent non-life-threatening injuries, a 24-year-old man with potentially life-threatening injuries, and a 28-year-old man with potentially life-threatening injuries. They were transported by ambulance to HCMC. The 28-year-old man later died at the hospital. A fourth man, 36, was transported by ambulance to North Memorial Health with apparent non-life-threatening injuries.
A fifth man, 26, later walked into HCMC with an apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wound, according to MPD.
The location at 18th and Nicollet Avenue is adjacent to the area where the “G Block” gang has been reported to operate an open-air drug market. Alpha News reported earlier this month that several people have been federally charged in connection to that alleged drug activity by the G Block gang at that location.
