Governors And The Public Approve Of Trump’s COVID-19 Response

Recent polls, statements from conservative and liberal governors alike and social media trends all point to high levels of approval for how Trump has handled coronavirus.

The majority of Americans now approve of how President Donald Trump has handled the coronavirus pandemic as state leaders praise his effectiveness.

Trump held a teleconference with all 50 governors, Thursday, to discuss a unified solution to COVID-19 epidemic. During the conference, many state leaders from both sides of the aisle praised the president’s actions, mirroring his high levels of public support during this difficult time.

“I wanted to first express my gratitude to your staffs and to others working in the administration who we’ve interacted with. They’ve really done yeoman work in being responsive to us,” Democrat Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said to Trump and Vice President Mike Pence during the meeting.

Another liberal governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, also praised the administration saying that when she asked for help, Pence was in touch with her “immediately. And it has, in fact, made a difference.”

Republican Governors Brian Kemp from Georgia and Larry Hogan of Maryland and more thanked the president for his administration’s frequent communication with states governments.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also mentioned his participation in this conference during a press briefing, Friday. The Governor said he shared his state’s needs with the president, marking the second time Walz has asked Trump for help dealing with Coronavirus.

55% of U.S. adults said they approve Trump’s response to the virus, according to an ABC News/Ipsos poll reported Friday. This represents an improvement since last week’s poll which found that only 43% of Americans had positive feelings about the administration’s action.

The Republican party is also unified behind Trump, with 92% of GOP voters saying the like how Trump is doing amidst the coronavirus situation, according to the most recent ABC/Ipsos poll.

#ThankYouPresidentTrump also became the number one trend on Twitter Friday night, indicating a substantial amount of online chatter about the President’s COVID-19 response.

#ThankYouPresidentTrump was a hot topic of discussion Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Rick Klein, the Political Director of ABC News, and MaryAlice Parks, a reporter with the network, predict that this new wave of support for the president will have a substantial impact on the 2020 election. They also note how despite the economy, perhaps Trump’s favorite measure of success, taking a downward turn this epidemic has forged a moment of bipartisan support for his administration, providing crucial footing as the general election draws nearer.
