About a year ago, Democratic primary voters rejected the socialist candidate, and yet they’re still getting one in the Oval Office.
Joe Biden ran for president as a moderate — perhaps only compared to fringe lunatics like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren — and maybe he once was. As a U.S. senator, he defended the Hyde Amendment, voted for the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and a bill prohibiting late-term abortion.
Biden now opposes the Hyde Amendment and supports the so-called “Equality Act,” which suspends RFRA’s protections in order to grant special privileges to activist groups. He now leads a party that tolerates no dissent on abortion, forces pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise for abortion, and hired a Cabinet head that makes nuns buy contraceptive insurance.
While I agreed with Ed Morrissey last week that Sanders would’ve composed a worse cabinet — undoubtedly riddled with America haters — it’s still not a good look, and Biden has governed hard left through 90 days.
Upon entering office, he rushed executive orders to reverse former President Donald Trump’s policies on matters from energy and immigration to guns and girls’ sports. He would not work with Republicans to pass a sensible COVID-19 bill, and instead signed a purely partisan Democrat wish list.
Biden recently lied and made offensive racial comments about Georgia’s new election integrity law, while encouraging Major League Baseball to pull its All-Star Game out of Atlanta, costing hard-working Americans millions of dollars. MLB even cited Biden in its cliché-laden statement that never objected to particulars of the law.
While Biden danced around whether he would expand the Supreme Court with leftist justices during the presidential campaign, last week he issued an executive order creating a supposedly bipartisan commission to study “Supreme Court reform,” which could be the first step toward packing the Court.
Unsurprisingly, many members are to the left of most Americans. Commissions like this are usually where ideas die, but congressional Democrats are moving forward with their totalitarian agenda.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell exposed the idea, noting “this faux-academic study of a nonexistent problem fits squarely within liberals’ years-long campaign to politicize the court, intimidate its members and subvert its independence.”
Just as he always steadfastly supported the filibuster, Biden used to have common sense on Supreme Court matters. In 1987, he cited a Senate Judiciary Committee report from a half-century prior, condemning President Franklin Roosevelt’s court-packing scheme as a “bonehead idea” and “an invasion of judicial power such as has never before been attempted in this country.” He also said FDR had been “corrupted by power.”
As Senate Judiciary Committee chair, not only did Biden help orchestrate the “high-tech lynching” of Clarence Thomas, Biden caved to special interests and led the destruction of nominee Robert Bork, despite originally saying if “after our investigations, he looks a lot like Scalia, I’d have to vote for him.”
So the irascible Biden was and is a partisan hack. Now his left flank has pushed the president over the deep end. But unlike Barack Obama 12 years ago, Biden has no mandate for his hyper-partisanship.
His party’s cultural Marxism and hostility toward law enforcement caused a surprising loss of 14 House seats last fall; the Senate is tied because Democrats didn’t gain what they expected in the upper chamber; and he won the presidency by only 44,000 votes across three states, with roughly the same Electoral College margin as Trump. Yet Biden is ramming a far-left agenda through Congress. It seems like the 46th president is determined to make his legacy even more radical than Obama’s.
Why? Vaccination efforts are going well, the economy is rebounding from the artificial shutdown, and life is returning to normal. That’s all most Americans want. If Biden had common sense, he’d return to pro-American immigration and foreign policies, then sit back and enjoy; instead he and his appallingly-inept VP apparently want to appease the perpetually angry left and make offensive speeches.
