Dozens of Minnesotans gathered on the Lowry Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis Saturday night in a show of solidarity with Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion of the country.

The bridge glowed with Ukraine’s national colors along with other landmarks like U.S. Bank Stadium, Target Field, the I-35W bridge, Nicollet Mall, and the Capella Tower.

Minnesota is home to an estimated 17,000 Ukrainian Americans, including one man who said some of his relatives are “hunkering down and sheltering in place” because they couldn’t make it out of Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv in time.

“They are all afraid for their lives,” he said. “People are filling the train stations, using the train stations like bunkers.”

A similar rally took place Thursday in Northeast Minneapolis outside St. Constantine Ukrainian Catholic Church, where an estimated 40% of parishioners were born in Ukraine.

Russia’s invasion entered its fourth day as the sun rose over Ukraine Sunday morning. Russia has encountered more resistance from the Ukrainian people than anticipated, reportedly leaving President Vladimir Putin “furious” and “fuming.”
