As a former Navy SEAL and US Marine, I am thrilled at the prospect of JD Vance serving as our next vice president. His elevation to this high office would not only mark a historic first for Marines, but it would also bring a leader with humble roots, military experience, and a profound understanding of the needs of Midwestern Americans, including Minnesotans, to the executive branch.

Marines have always put country first, often at the expense of personal recognition or partisan politics. This is one reason why we have yet to see a Marine ascend to the role of president or vice president. Our foundational leadership training emphasizes selflessness, integrity, and unwavering commitment to duty. We are taught to lead by example, prioritize the welfare of our team, and make decisions grounded in principle rather than personal gain. JD Vance embodies these values through and through.

Vance’s life story resonates deeply with many Minnesotans. He grew up in a working-class family in Ohio, experiencing firsthand the struggles and challenges faced by many in the Midwest. His time in the Marines was transformative, instilling in him the core values of honor, courage, and commitment. These principles are not just words but a way of life that has shaped his approach to leadership and public service.

Marines are taught to adapt, overcome, and excel in the most demanding situations. This training sets us up for success in any field we choose to enter. Vance’s transition from military service to a successful career in law, business, and authorship demonstrates the effectiveness of this training. His best-selling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” offers an unflinching look at the plight of working-class Americans, highlighting his deep empathy and understanding of the challenges they face.

Education is another cornerstone of Vance’s journey. After serving in the Marines, he pursued higher education with vigor, earning a degree from Yale Law School. This commitment to continued education and knowledge acquisition is vital for any leader, particularly one serving in the highest levels of government. It equips them with the intellectual tools needed to navigate complex policy issues and make informed decisions that benefit the entire nation.

Vance has a proven track record of helping people in the Midwest, particularly in Ohio. He’s consistently focused on revitalizing local economies, improving education, and supporting families. These efforts are precisely what Minnesotans need in a vice president—someone who understands the unique challenges of everyday Americans and is committed to creating opportunities for growth and prosperity, no matter your background, race, or ethnicity.

As vice president, Vance would bring his Marine Corps leadership training, commitment to education, and deep-rooted understanding of Midwestern values to the national stage. His influence would undoubtedly benefit Minnesotans, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are addressed. The time has come for a Marine to step into this pivotal role, and J.D. Vance is the right person for the job. President Trump’s selection of Vance would benefit not just Minnesotans, but the entire country, reaffirming our nation’s commitment to principled, compassionate, and effective leadership.
