DFL state lawmaker announces campaign for Hennepin County attorney

Rep. Cedrick Frazier has authored legislation to develop a reparations system and eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes. He endorsed Mary Moriarty in 2022.

Rep. Cedrick Frazier/Minnesota House

State Rep. Cedrick Frazier, DFL-New Hope, announced Monday that he is running to be the next Hennepin County Attorney. The news comes shortly after the current county attorney, Mary Moriarty, said that she will not seek reelection.

“I’m running for Hennepin County Attorney because I believe that public safety starts with public trust, and leadership starts with listening,” said Frazier in a statement. “I’ve lived the consequences of failed policies and spent my career fighting for fairness, safety, and justice for everyone.”

Frazier was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2020 after a short stint on the New Hope City Council. Since joining the legislature, the DFLer has supported efforts to give state driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, extend a state-run healthcare program to illegal aliens, and make Minnesota a so-called “sanctuary state.”

Additionally, Frazier was the chief author of legislation to eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes and wrote the “Minnesota Migration Act,” a bill that would begin the process of developing a reparations system. The Minnesota Migration Act sought $100 million of taxpayer money.

Since 2016, Frazier has worked as a staff attorney for Education Minnesota, a statewide teachers union that is among the most influential groups at the Minnesota State Capitol.

A graduate of the former William Mitchell College of Law, Frazier is the first high-profile candidate to jump into the race to replace Moriarty. That election may quickly become a referendum on Moriarty’s tenure as Hennepin County Attorney.

Throughout her tenure, Moriarty has been heavily criticized with many feeling that she is too lax on criminals and not tough enough on crime. Frazier endorsed Moriarty in her 2022 campaign for Hennepin County Attorney.

“Mary Moriarty is the clear choice to be our next Hennepin County Attorney,” said Frazier at the the time. “She has the integrity, character, and ability to lead. We need a county attorney who has the expertise and vision to meet this critical moment.”
