EXCLUSIVE: Minnesota’s top federal prosecutor speaks out on Antifa indictment, political violence

“We allege that it's criminal conspiracy. That is the heart of the indictment—and it's criminal because what it's all about is not peaceful protest," said U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen.

U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen joined Liz Collin on her podcast to take a closer look at the federal indictment of an Antifa-related group that was allegedly behind the threats, the stalking, and the violence that played out in Minnesota earlier this year.

Rosen spoke about some of the details in the 95-page indictment against 15 defendants who are accused of conspiring to impede or injure federal officers during Operation Metro Surge, the large-scale immigration enforcement effort that took place at the start of the year.

“We allege that it’s criminal conspiracy. That is the heart of the indictment—and it’s criminal because what it’s all about is not peaceful protest,” Rosen said.

Rosen also spoke about the importance of the indictment itself. “We think it should be mandatory reading, that everybody ought to read the 95 pages of this indictment because people will be informed of things that—at least by my eyes—they’re just not going to learn by looking at some of the typical media outlets reporting on this,” he said.

Alpha News has also confirmed through data requests that seven of the 15 people indicted were referred to the office of Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, namely: Hannah Margaret Van De Water Davis; Treasure Cay Thoreson; Nathan Junho Kim; Alec Stewart; Douglas Misterek; Dustin Scott Beisell; and Natasha Rakotz.

A review of court records shows two of the seven are facing misdemeanor charges while Moriarty’s office has dismissed or not filed charges against the rest.

Rosen said, “I don’t think it’s any secret that there is a broad philosophical gulf between the way this office looks at law enforcement and a prosecution and the way that the Hennepin County attorney looks at it.”

However, Rosen pointed out that “the day-to-day relationship between the line prosecutors and the supervisors in the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and in our office has really been excellent. And I will even say that I do have a good working relationship with the Hennepin County attorney.”

“But elections matter and the people of Hennepin County elected a Hennepin County attorney that has a philosophy that is different than mine and different than this office’s and that difference in philosophy has real consequences,” Rosen added.

The ‘terrible scourge’ of political violence

Despite the handling by Moriarty’s office and the media, Rosen explained how the alleged criminality and political violence involved are the main concerns of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

“Political violence is a terrible scourge in this country. It doesn’t matter what the political affinity of the perpetrators are. It’s the position of this office, and I dare say the position of this administration, that if you want to use violence to advance your political causes, we’re going to come after you and we’re going to come after you with the full force of the law,” Rosen said.

Rosen also observed that people like those named in the indictment have “very, very little respect” for peaceful protesters, whom they “speak against.”

Rosen said that peaceful protesters “are mere cover. They are the people that give them some numbers out in the street in order to make it appear that their violent tactics have popular support. In fact, I don’t believe their violent tactics have any popular support outside their circles.”

In drawing from the indictment, Rosen pointed out how one Antifa leader, Kyle Wagner, allegedly proclaimed on social media that people needed to start “putting hands” on federal law enforcement.

Rosen argued that by indicting these 15 defendants, the DOJ has “indicted the people who hold these [peaceful] protesters in the lowest possible regard.”

“What it’s all about is a conspiracy to impede legitimate law enforcement operations, lawful law enforcement operations,” he said. “And all you have to do is look at their own words and their own actions.”
