Three people died Monday afternoon in a shooting in St. Paul’s Highland neighborhood, and police say they took a person of interest into custody later that evening.
In a press briefing and written statement, police stated that officers responded around 4:10 p.m. to multiple reports of shots fired at an apartment complex on the 1500 block of St. Paul Avenue and found three adults deceased in the leasing office of the complex.
Several of the apartment buildings were evacuated to ensure the safety of residents, Police Chief Axel Henry said.
Henry also said a search warrant was subsequently executed at a secondary location, but no suspects were found at that unspecified location.
In response to a reporter’s question, Henry indicated the suspect was somewhat known to police and it was not the first time police had dealt with the person. Details were limited on the connection between the suspect and the victims, whose identities will be released at a later time by the medical examiner.
Police updated in a statement before 10 p.m. that a person of interest had been taken into custody. The booking record was not immediately available.
The triple homicide follows another triple shooting in St. Paul on Saturday when a 27-year-old man was shot and killed in the Thomas-Dale neighborhood at the site of a large gathering. Two others, and adult male and adult female, showed up at Regions Hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. No arrest had been made at the time of that shooting.

Update: Police said Tsegaab A. Binessu, 30, was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection to the triple homicide. Binessu was taken into custody by St. Louis County deputies in Virginia, Minn., Monday night and transported to St. Paul police headquarters.
