A Burnsville woman was sentenced to over 17 years in prison after being charged last year with severely burning a toddler.
Anike Tatiaramika Jiles, 23, was charged in September on one felony count each of first-degree assault involving great bodily harm, third-degree assault and child endangerment after law enforcement responded to a report of a medical emergency involving a 22-month-old toddler at a residence in Burnsville, according to the criminal complaint.
When responders arrived at the residence, they found Jiles holding the toddler who had hands that were “severely burnt with peeling and blistering skin.” Jiles told responders that the injuries were sustained after she told the toddler to wash her hands.
Jiles, who was identified in the criminal complaint as the girlfriend of the child’s mother, was watching the child while the mother was at work. Upon questioning, Jiles proceeded to make several inconsistent statements to medics, police and investigators about how the child had sustained the injuries. The child’s mother subsequently told police that the child was unable to wash her hands herself.
The toddler sustained second-degree burns to her hands and wrists, and medical professionals determined that the injuries were consistent with a “dipping” type injury, meaning that the toddler’s hands had been submerged into hot liquid or water, the complaint said.
Jiles pleaded guilty in March to one count of felony first-degree assault involving great bodily harm. On Thursday Jiles was sentenced to 206 months in prison and the two other felony charges were dismissed.
Jiles is expected to serve just over 11 years under Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines, which specify a minimum term of imprisonment equal to two-thirds of the executed sentence, and the remainder of the term to be served on supervised release. Jiles was also ordered to pay just over $5,000 in restitution, according to court records.
