State Representative Joe Atkins, (D-Inver Grove Heights) is in the hot seat after the Star Tribune reported that all three of his children received college scholarships from the BEST Foundation, a charity arm of the Inver Grove Heights school district where Atkins has been employed as executive director for the last 20 years.

Minnesota may often be thought of as a state with quality public education, but many may not realize that it has one of the largest achievement gaps in the country. CBS Minnesota explains only 16% of African American high school seniors are college ready, compared to 61% of whites. In addition, Minnesota’s Native and Latino students have the lowest graduates in the nation. Literacy rates play a role in these large achievement gaps. With the help of the Board of Directors, Keller’s organization has collected and distributed roughly 1.8 million books, and she is only 15 years old. Her next goal is to reach 2 million books collected and distributed.

According to the University of Minnesota Academics United website (an affiliate of SEIU Local 284), faculty are seeking unionization to “restore a strong faculty voice in University governance and give us more power to oppose the erosion of research funding, community connections, teaching resources, and tenure lines.” In addition, the website points out that the union is working for “decent pay” and “job security” for faculty.

A Minnesota school district faces possible legal action by citizens opposed to the proposed closure of three elementary schools. Stating that the district has lost the "fundamental trust of the citizens," the group claims that a lawsuit would be "designed to protect everyone in the district from arbitrary, rushed and capricious overreach by the board and district leadership."

Stillwater School District Superintendent Denise Pontrelli is recommending the board delay the vote to close three elementary schools until March 3, 2016. The opposition groups oppose the delay; request the board to reject the delay and Vote NO on the plan at the Feb. 11, 2016 meeting.
