A Maple Grove mother wants the public to know about a disturbing encounter her teenage daughter had while working alone at a local tanning salon — an incident now under police investigation.

Kristi, who asked that her last name not be used, said her 16-year-old daughter was working at a Totally Tan location in Maple Grove Monday morning when a man walked in and asked about services.

After being shown around, he left — but returned about 30 minutes later, apparently waiting until she was alone.

Kristi said the man proceeded to tell her teen daughter that “he has a fetish and asked if he could masturbate in front of her and that he’d pay her $200.”

When the teen refused, the man allegedly kept increasing the offer. “She continued to say no and tell him that she’s 16,” Kristi said. “His response was, ‘That’s the age of consent.’”

The teen asked the man to leave, and eventually he did. She then called her mother in tears prompting Kristi to call 911.

Police confirm investigation

In a statement to Alpha News, the Maple Grove Police Department confirmed the incident, but would not identify a suspect by name.

“On August 11, 2025, at 9:30 a.m., Maple Grove Police responded to Totally Tan… following a report that an adult male propositioned a juvenile female employee to watch him perform a sexual act. The employee declined, and the suspect left the store. Through an investigation, officers identified a 56-year-old male suspect. No charges have been filed to date. This case remains an open active investigation. No further information will be released at this time,” the statement said.

Kristi said the tanning salon quickly took action and put measures in place to ensure her daughter would not work alone again. They assigned an adult manager to be present with the teen during her work shifts.

“They’ve been really good about it,” Kristi said, noting that the incident was caught on surveillance video.
