Erik Mortensen, a native Minnesotan and local business owner, was endorsed by the Scott County Republicans over the incumbent Rep. Bob Loonan for the Minnesota House District 55A.
Mortensen said that he chose to run against the incumbent because he, like many other Minnesotans, are tired of politicians making promises that they do not keep.
“[Loonan has] held a few positions that counter the needs of our community,” Mortensen said.
Like any community, House District 55A faces problems that can affect the community as a whole. Mortensen noted the changing demographics, saying it is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is important to also preserve the culture that shaped the community. Another issue is an overpowered, overreaching government. Mortensen believes in individual freedoms and limited government.
“Overall the current political climate in Minnesota is very exciting. [President Donald Trump] lost by less than 2% here. We need to capitalize on this momentum and the resurgence of conservative values,” Mortensen said.
Mortensen has not held public office before, but he assures voters that he will stand up for what is right. Mortensen made clear he embraces accountability and is not afraid to go against the grain and stand up for what is right.
“I am not beholden to Republican leadership. I will champion conservative values and I will not waver. I am going to go there and do what I said I was going to do,” Mortensen said.
