House DFL Leadership Lumps Gun Rights Restrictions into Omnibus Budget Bill

The Omnibus Public Safety Budget Bill, HF 2792, is a massive budget bill that incorporates many subjects including gun control and the restoration of the right to vote for convicted felons.

2nd amendment

The Omnibus Public Safety Budget Bill, HF 2792, is a massive budget bill that incorporates many subjects including gun control and the restoration of the right to vote for convicted felons.

Speaker of the House, Representative Melissa Hortman (DFL- Brooklyn Park), tweeted that the gun control bills are “common sense measures” that have broad support by Minnesotans. “If this were true, Speaker Hortman and Majority Leader Winkler should bring these bills forward to the House floor as standalone bills rather than burying them inside a budget bill” responded Bryan Strawser, Chair of the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus.

Representative Jeremy Munson told Alpha News in previous reporting that “Democrats are promoting One Minnesota, but it is clear that One Minnesota does not include the voices of rural Minnesota.” We are seeing that same reality apply here. Strawser expands on this notion, stating “House DFL has internal divisions between their progressive members in the metro and their members from Greater Minnesota that call into question if these bills can even pass off of the House floor as standalone bills.”

The New House Republican Caucus has worked hard this session to expose the dangers of omnibus bills and the lack of transparency they offer for Minnesotans. On Apr 5,  The Health and Human Services Finance Omnibus Bill came out as the “largest and most expensive single bill in Minnesota State History” totalling 998 pages, as Representative Jeremy Munson (R- Lake Crystal) said.
