Minnesota House Democrats urged Vice President Mike Pence to remove the president from office by invoking the 25th Amendment in a letter sent Monday.

The letter follows calls from national lawmakers for President Donald Trump’s removal, which could be done through impeachment or the invocation of the 25th Amendment, they claim.

In the U.S. House, Democrats formally introduced a single article of impeachment against Trump on Monday as well as a resolution that asks Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment.

“It is clear to everyone, in America and abroad, that President Trump and his staunchest allies incited a failed insurrection,” Minnesota Democrats say in their letter, referring to Wednesday’s riots in the U.S. Capitol.

“The responsibility for the carnage, disorder, and harm to human life lays squarely at the feet of President Trump and his enablers. He can no longer be trusted with the discharge of the duties of the most powerful office in the world,” says the letter.

The letter claims the president “has lost the trust of the American people” and “is no longer suitable to govern.”

“We therefore request that you — along with members of the cabinet — immediately invoke the authority under the 25th Amendment of the United States Constitution. This is not a request that comes from a place of partisanship or political disagreement. It comes from genuine concern for the future of our republic,” the letter continues.

The letter was signed by 34 House Democrats, who call the 25th Amendment the “appropriate remedy” for a situation such as this one.

“All Americans deserve the opportunity to see us — as elected leaders at all levels — work together to help ensure we can emerge from the current challenges and offer everyone a strong future,” the letter concludes.
