Letter to the Editor: Stand up for decency. Don’t let pornographers ruin lives.

Stand up for decency. Don't let pornographers ruin lives. Speak out against the evils of pornography.

Letter to the Editor

Many people were outraged by the raunchy NFL half-time show, as well they should be.  But we have lost our ability to be truly outraged due to desensitization to pornography.  We have been steeped in a pornographic culture since the 1950’s with the acceptance of Hugh Hefner’s Playboy.  Since then people’s outrage erupts then quickly dies. Few follow through on their beliefs (other than ranting to like-minded individuals) while the rest continue to view more porn and more explicit porn.

When I was in my twenties, an old woman told me about her friend who had suffered greatly because her husband was a gambler.  He’d gamble away their money each payday. Their chronic poverty was painful,  but not as painful as her lack of trust in him.  Her husband’s tearful confessions, “I promise, never again!”  became meaningless.

Pornography is “biologically addictive” and pornography addicts are habitual promise breakers.

Yet pornographers continue to amass billions of dollars due to lack of enforcement of obscenity laws. HBO mainstreams violent pornography.  Grocery stores unashamedly sell the eroticized Sports Illustrated’s “Swim Suit” edition. Where is our backbone?  Many people are as spiritually hollow as a rotting tree.  They have no experience in sacrificing even small things for something of greater importance.

Stand up for decency. Don’t let pornographers ruin lives. Speak out against the evils of pornography.
