11 p.m. – In the battle for control of the Minnesota House of Representatives, Republican challengers have won two swing districts. In House District 18A, Erica Schwartz has defeated incumbent Jeff Brand by more than 3 percent after all precincts were reported shortly after 10:30 p.m. The southern Minnesota district spans St. Peter, North Mankato and portions of Mankato. Schwartz and her husband own a grocery business in Nicollet.
In the west metro suburb of Shakopee, Republican challenger Aaron Paul defeated DFL incumbent Brad Tabke by just more than 2 percent. Paul, a police officer, garnered 8,281 votes to Tabke’s 7,921 in a House District 54A race that Republicans were targeting for a metro area pickup.
The DFL holds a 70-64 majority over Republicans in the state house. Republicans need to pick up a net of 4 seats to take control of the legislature and end the DFL “trifecta.”

7 a.m. – The polls are now open in Minnesota. As of Tuesday morning, local election officials had accepted 1,271,636 absentee and mail ballots for the Nov. 5, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office.
Local election officials have distributed 1,441,898 absentee and mail ballots in Minnesota since voting began on Sept. 20.
About 128,000 ballots have not yet been returned. All ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.
Secretary of State Steve Simon advised voters to return their ballots in-person to their local election office as soon as possible to ensure their vote is counted. Voters can also choose to vote at their local polling place instead of returning their absentee ballot.
All polling places are open until 8 p.m. As long as voters are in line by 8 p.m., they can vote. In Minnesota, people can register to vote on Election Day.
