Minnesotan meteorologist Sven Sundgaard says that protestors who oppose the economic shutdowns are “Nazi sympathizer gun fetishist miscreants.”
On April 17, hundreds of protestors gathered outside Tim Walz’s executive mansion to protest the Governor’s shutdown orders to shut down the state’s economy. In the wake of the demonstration, Michael Adam Latz, a local Rabi, posted his scathing opinion of the protestors. Sundgaard, who works for KARE 11, then reposted Latz’s statement on his own Facebook page. After the post drew controversy, it was deleted, although screenshots still exist.
Latz and Sundgaard say that the “white nationalist Nazi sympathizer gun fetishist miscreants” who turned up outside Walz’s mansion hold a minority opinion that endangers the public health. They also characterize the protestors as “armed extremists.” Attendees of both the protest before Sundgaard’s post and the protest that occurred a few days later did not appear to be armed.
Sungaard’s reposted rant garnered over 1,000 likes and drew complimentary comments from those who also favor Walz’s shutdowns. “I just cannot comprehend people who think they know better than doctors and scientists,” one Facebook user chimed in.
Despite criticism leveraged by some online pundits, the protestors also have their fair share of supporters, such as President Donald Trump who tweeted out the name of the first rally hours before it occurred.
