Mike’s Discount Foods in Fridley has donated 50 cases of protective gloves to Mercy Hospital’s Unity campus in Fridley to help the hospital restock supplies and help assist their COVID-19 response.
The local discount grocery chain announced on their Facebook page on Friday that with help from staff in the hospital’s parking lot, they had gotten gloves delivered.

The discount grocery store had posted earlier in the week that they had a pallet of the gloves for sale but had not considered donating them because they were food-grade gloves, not medical-grade. However, the store subsequently learned that the hospital did have a use for the gloves so they made arrangements for the donation to the hospital.
According to the post, Mercy Hospital’s Unity campus, located at 550 Osborne Road Northeast in Fridley, has a tent set up in their parking lot to accept donations of gloves, masks and other personal protection equipment (PPE).
There have been numerous reports in the last few weeks about shortages of PPE, like gloves, masks and gowns for first responders and hospital staff, and they’ve been scrambling for donations to help protect workers on the front lines of patient care during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Local companies have stepped up to the plate to help fill the gap. Shakopee company MyPillow announced that it had converted their production operation to make face masks to be donated to local hospitals, Maplewood’s 3M is ramping up production of respirators, and Fridley-headquartered Medtronic has taken steps to increase ventilator production worldwide.
Mike’s Discount Foods is a family-owned operation based in Fridley and has been in business since 1989. They have five locations in Minnesota in the cities of Columbia Heights-Hilltop, Fridley, Anoka, Braham and Comfrey. The group of stores specializes in stocking closeout and short-dated grocery items and household goods, generally at deep discounts. The company states that they regularly donate a portion of their profits back into their communities through donations and help with fundraising for schools, hospitals, churches and food-shelves.
