Five teens have been charged by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office following a brutal assault that occurred during a Robbinsdale Cooper basketball game last week that left the juvenile victim, a Fridley player, with serious injuries.
On Tuesday, the four adults and one juvenile struck the victim on the top of the head with a metal tire-iron, attacked him with punches, and attempted to stab him with a knife as he sat on the visiting team bench inside the school gym.
Charged are Yahya Abdul Khanyare, 18, Dursa Muktar Mohamed, 18, Ayub Mohamed Ali, 19, Salman Abdurashid Mohamed, 16, and Mubashir Nasir Ali, 18. All are charged with felony counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and second-degree riot while armed; Dursa Mohamed is additionally charged with fleeing police.
According to the complaint:
Video from the school shows the group of suspects arriving together in a vehicle. They could be seen retrieving a tire-iron and knife from the vehicle before proceeding inside the school, where they spent several minutes talking and conspiring together.
They then entered the gym, avoiding the ticketed point of entry, and walked straight toward the bench where the victim was seated. As they neared the victim, one of the males began to run toward the victim. He raised his hand in the air and struck the victim in the head with a metal tire-iron.
Several of the other co-conspirators joined in the attack, attempting to strike and hit the victim with fists and other weapons. One of the co-conspirators attempted to stab the victim with a knife. Other co-conspirators stayed near the exit and appeared to be acting as lookouts during the attack. After the initial attack with the tire-iron, the victim was protected by his teammates and coaches, and the five suspects fled the gym together. They were arrested a short time later, after attempting to flee from police and eventually crashing while entering a nearby freeway ramp.
The victim was left with a gash on his head that required six staples to close. No motive for the attack was detailed in the complaint.
Court records show Khanyare posted bail and was released from custody on Saturday; Ayub Ali was released on zero bail on Saturday; and Dursa Mohamed and Mubashir Ali each remain in custody on $100,000 bail. Custody information about juvenile Salman Mohamed was not immediately available, nor was a mugshot available.
Other court and jail records show Khanyare was arrested and jailed just days before the attack in a separate incident in Brooklyn Park. Khanyare is charged in that case with carrying a pistol without a permit and fleeing police on foot following a traffic stop. He was released from custody before making a court appearance in the case, and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 6 in that case.
