Minnesota Democrat compares sex-specific bathrooms to segregation-era policies

Sen. Erin Maye Quade dismissed concerns about men in women's bathrooms as "anti-trans bathroom panic."

State Sen. Erin Maye Quade/Minnesota Senate

State Sen. Erin Maye Quade is drawing attention online after comparing sex-specific bathroom policies to racial segregation-era restrooms in a social media post.

The account Leftists of MN posted on social media that some attendees at the recent Minneapolis DFL convention allegedly opposed sharing bathrooms with the opposite sex, but their concerns were dismissed by party leaders.

“NEW: At the Minneapolis DFL Convention, some attendees (delegates?) opposed sharing bathrooms with the opposite sex (for obvious reasons). DFL leadership dismissed these concerns, saying they don’t fit the party’s ‘big tent.’ Sen. Maye Quade agreed vociferously,” the account wrote on X.

The account Better Minneapolis addressed the issue, saying: “The DFL’s national unpopularity will persist if it insists on complete agreement on social issues. Some convention attendees expressed discomfort with the bathroom arrangements. Telling them their feelings are invalid is more likely to drive them out of the party than change their minds.”

Maye Quade then reshared that post with the comment: “Absolute perfection that you can’t tell if this is about segregation-era bathrooms or today’s anti-trans bathroom panic.”

She followed up in a separate post: “It is illegal in Minnesota to discriminate against trans people. Period, full stop. That includes in bathrooms. Treating people’s ability to use public spaces as a ‘social issue’ continues to bandy about trans people’s existence as a political issue and it is gross. And dangerous.”

“Anti-LGBTQ hate groups spent hundreds of millions of dollars to create create panic around the existence of trans people to undermine ALL civil rights protections. Stop doing their work for them,” she added.

Maye Quade, a Democrat from Apple Valley, previously served in the Minnesota House before being elected to the Senate in 2022. She was the chief author of a bill to make Minnesota a “trans refuge” state and is the latest local Democrat to double down on the issue.

For instance, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison recently boasted about his efforts to keep boys in girls’ sports.

“We’re talking about kids, minors, who all they want to do is be on the team and build relationships with their friends, but this guy (President Donald Trump) has said no, they must be excluded, they must be scapegoated,” Ellison continued. “We said absolutely, hell no.”
