Just over a year ago Minnesota legislators received a hefty pay increase raising their pay from $31,100 to $45,000 not including per diems. The pay increase was determined by a newly created council that was created after Democrats sponsored a constitutional amendment to allow pay increases to be established outside of the regular legislative process.
The council is again proposing a pay increase for the legislators. The council has agreed and voted to give legislators an additional $1,500 making the base salary for a legislator $46,500.
Legislators also can collect daily per diem when they are in session to pay for additional expenses and even get reimbursements for lodging and mileage. Legislators are considered part-time employees however many legislators have complained that due to high demands from constituents make it hard to find additional work.
