The Campaign to ban or limit the use of plastic straws is gaining momentum in Minnesota. Previously, influential Democrats have introduced legislation that would punish establishments who provide a plastic straw without the customer specifically requesting one. The action of doing so would become a petty misdemeanor.
Now Republican State Senator Jim Abeler introduced his own bill that would also prohibit serving plastic straws in restaurants. The bill authored by Abeler would fine eating establishments $50 per straw that they distribute without a customer expressly asking for one. Democrat Senators John Marty and John A. Hoffman joined Jim Abeler as co-authors of the bill.
Jim Abeler’s legislation is considered a milder alternative to the liberal proposals of the past.
Abler defended the prosal on Facebook as a compromise to the Democrat plan.
Minnesota has the reputation of a state that prides itself on being environmentally conscious, full of lakes and rolling bluffs. With Democrats controlling the Governor’s office, and with Democrats being able to reach across the aisle for help, we could soon see a turn in the war on plastic straws.
