A St. Paul mayoral candidate and current state representative, who claimed during the last legislative session that her family entered the United States illegally, recently settled a civil personal injury case in which she was accused of reckless driving.
Rep. Kaohly Vang Her, DFL-St. Paul, agreed to an undisclosed settlement with the plaintiff in June stemming from a civil lawsuit filed in December 2024 over a crash that occurred in February 2022.
An original filing in Ramsey County District Court by the plaintiff (alleged victim) claimed that Her caused the collision due to “recklessness, carelessness and negligence.”
The lawsuit claimed that on Feb. 10, 2022, Her was driving a vehicle near Rice Street and Aurora Avenue when she struck the alleged victim’s vehicle, and that Her was driving at a “dangerous” and “excessive” rate of speed in a “negligent and unlawful manner” that resulted in “severe and permanent” injuries to the alleged victim.
The lawsuit originally sought damages in excess of $50,000 for medical bills, loss of earnings, and pain and suffering sustained by the alleged victim.
In a written response to the lawsuit filed in district court, Her originally denied any negligence, carelessness, or responsibility for the crash, and claimed the plaintiff’s injuries and damages were due to his own negligence.
An undisclosed settlement was reached through arbitration this spring, which included an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit with prejudice.
Her has a prior 2018 citation for speeding. Another traffic case involving Her was filed in January of this year, according to available court records, but related documents were not able to be immediately obtained from the court website.
Her claimed during a special session in June, during which health care for illegal aliens was debated, that her family had entered the U.S. illegally based on falsified documentation produced by her father in the 1970s, when Her was just four years old. “My family broke the law to come here,” Her said.
After Her’s comments blew up on social media, Her later tried to clarify the story she attempted to convey, stating “I am legal,” and “my parents are citizens.” Her characterized the viral sharing of her original comments as “clickbait” and said her family’s story was “weaponized to spread misinformation” against immigrants.
Her announced her challenge to current St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter in August and touts her achievements as writing legislation to increase the number “BIPOC” teachers in districts across the state, obtaining more funding for students who are English language learners, and standing up to the Trump administration’s “unlawful bullying” of immigrants.
Her has also recently called for an “assault weapons” ban, helped push Minnesota to the top of the list of states with the most radical abortion policies, and helped make Minnesota an LGBTQ+ sanctuary state.
Alpha News reached out to Rep. Her, her mayoral campaign, and the Minnesota House DFL for comment but did not receive a response.
