The area of Dinkytown near the University of Minnesota campus has seen a rash of violent crime incidents in the last few weeks including several robberies.

In one violent incident just after midnight on Monday, May 6, several shots were fired at a young man during an attempted robbery by a mob of teens who were described at the time as Somali males between the ages of 17 to 20, according to police scanner audio.

Crime Watch Minneapolis also posted about receiving several messages during the time period from residents and bystanders in the area who described the activity in Dinkytown that evening as an “absolute zoo,” and that several people in masks in multiple vehicles had flooded into the area.

A report later in the day by KARE11 said that the shots fired incident involved a young man who was just leaving work who was attacked after leaving Frank and Andrea’s with a slice of pizza. The 21-year-old victim said he was “outnumbered” by a group who started harassing him, calling him names, and picking at his food.

The group then physically attacked the young man, punching and kicking him. They ended up dislocating his shoulder. During the incident, the victim was able to retrieve a tire iron from the trunk of his vehicle in an attempt to defend himself. He said at that point, the suspects raised firearms at his face and started firing.

The sound of shots fired was captured on various video clips subsequently posted to social media by Crime Watch.

In a new clip obtained by Crime Watch this past Sunday, a video appears to show the incident from the point of view of one of the shooters, who apparently recorded the incident on their cellphone. The video shows the victim backing away as suspects behind the camera yell slurs and taunts. A brief image of a gun being pointed toward the victim can be seen in one frame.

As the victim escapes into a house, the sound of about 11 shots rings out as the suspects appear to flee away from the scene.

The sound of gunshots in the newly obtained video clip matches up to the sound of gunshots in the prior video clips posted.

An email to the Minneapolis Police Department on Monday inquiring whether any suspects in the May 6 assault and shots fired incident had been identified or arrested did not receive a response in time for this report.
