A Stillwater Area High School health class featured a presentation on Thursday, Jan. 9 by a local LGBTQ activist group called OutFront Minnesota, a parent said.

Documents from the training, called “LGBTQ+ 101 & Intersecting Identities Student Training,” say it included an “intersex video” and taught students about the “gender unicorn.”

According to a parent, the presentation was part of the school’s “Personal & Community Health” course, one of three courses that students must choose from. The parent said that the teacher did allow their student to opt out of the presentation.

“Personal and Community Health is a standards based course that is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead healthy lives,” a course description reads. Topics that are supposed to be covered in the course include mental health, alcohol, tobacco, sexual health, nutrition, and first aid.

According to the document, the talk included a pronoun explanation and “Discussion & Safer Space Guidelines.” It then defined various LGBTQ terms like gender identity and sexual orientation while discussing the difference between “sex assigned at birth” and “gender identity.”

The presentation also examined “homophobia,” “transphobia,” and “intersectionality.”

It then led students in reflecting on their school and how welcoming it is to LGBTQ students. According to the document, that included discussing slang like “f–” and “that’s so gay.”

The document notes that the Minnesota Student Survey was also discussed, which is a controversial statewide survey that has asked ninth- and 11th-grade students about their alcohol use and sexual activity levels.

“OutFront Minnesota provides education and training statewide, both virtual and in person! Our professional staff offers robust interactive sessions in various settings covering an array of topics related to LGBTQ+ equity,” the OutFront Minnesota website explains. The trainings are available at a cost.

Other trainings that the organization offers include “Advocacy 101 for your GSA” (Gender and Sexuality Alliance), “Allyship and Affirming Spaces”, “Coming Out”, and “Unclobbering the Bible.”

“The Bible has been used as a means for excluding queer people from the Christian church for ages. In this training we will examine those difficult passages, find new ways of interpretation, explore what scholars have to say about the Bible, and walk away with a new understanding of how we might interpret these hard-to-read passages,” says a training description.

Stillwater Area High School Principal Rob Bach did not respond to Alpha News’ request for comment regarding the training and if all parents were aware that it was part of the health course.
