A Rochester Public Schools employee has been charged with one count of possession of child pornography.
Jim Vin, 42, was arrested on Friday and charged Monday after authorities say they received an Internet Crimes Against Children tip in late August related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
According to the charges, the CSAM image in question was uploaded to Discord in April, and the tip also contained information on an email address and IP addresses associated with the Discord account.
The charges say administrative subpoenas were sent to Microsoft for subscriber information related to the email address associated with the Discord account that uploaded the image.
In response, Microsoft provided information indicating that the email address was registered to Vin, the charges explain.
Rochester police executed a search warrant Friday at Vin’s residence, where they seized multiple devices and placed him under arrest. During the arrest, a detective found that one of Vin’s credit cards had the same last four digits as the payment method used for the Discord account, according to the charging documents.
Police are continuing to review Vin’s devices.
Rochester Public Schools released a statement Monday detailing Vin’s employment history in the district dating back to 2007. He most recently worked as an education support professional at Washington Elementary from Aug. 17 to Sept. 18 this year.
“At this time, we have no information that suggests Jim Vin engaged in inappropriate conduct of a sexual nature towards any RPS students; however, given the seriousness of the charge, parents and educators may want to check in on students who attended these schools during the following years,” the district said.
“We take this matter very seriously and share the concern that many parents have felt and expressed about this situation,” it added. “We will continue to work with Law Enforcement on this matter and are also conducting our own internal investigation into the individual’s previous employment with Rochester Public Schools.”
