Senate race in Minnesota officially a ‘toss up’ as most recent poll shows a dead heat

Five polls in a row have shown the race between Republican Michele Tafoya and DFL Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan is within the margin of error.

A new poll in the race for U.S. Senate in Minnesota again shows a close contest between DFL Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and Republican Michele Tafoya. The poll is the fifth survey in recent weeks to show the Senate race is within the margin of error.

Conducted by InsiderAdvantage, the poll surveyed 1,200 likely general election voters from Sept. 28 to Sept. 29 and has a margin of error of ±2.95%. In total, 46% of poll respondents had a preference for Flanagan while 45% had a preference for Tafoya.

Meanwhile, Libertarian Party candidate Rebecca Whiting received 2%, independent candidate Marisa Simonetti received 1%, and 6% of respondents were undecided.

In a memo about the poll, InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery said, “This survey is unusual in that it goes against many of the trends we are seeing in other Senate contests. It appears that the decrease in popularity of Governor Tim Walz, combined with the growing evidence of fraud in the state are taking a toll on the DFL nominee.”

Additionally, Towery said, “Tafoya does extremely well with men and Flanagan is losing every age group other than the youngest of voters, who in the poll have a significant ‘enthusiasm about voting’ gap versus other age groups who are more enthusiastic.”

The InsiderAdvantage poll adds to the growing consensus that the Senate race in Minnesota is competitive. Prior to the most recent survey, four polls in a row have shown a close race.

Three of those polls had Flanagan leading by +2, +4, and +1 respectively; the fourth poll had the race tied with both Flanagan and Tafoya at 42%.

Additionally, the RealClearPolitics polling average for the Senate race shows Flanagan up by just 1.6%. Earlier this month, RealClearPolitics officially updated the status of Minnesota’s Senate race from “Leans Dem” to “Toss Up.”

In recent weeks, Flanagan and Tafoya have traded jabs over the airwaves but have not yet participated in a general election debate.

Tafoya, a former sideline reporter for NBC’s Sunday Night Football, has run ads hammering Flanagan for the fraud that has occurred under the Walz administration. Meanwhile, Flanagan has tried to tie Tafoya to President Donald Trump and the unpopular Iran War.

Minnesota has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 2002 and Tafoya faces an uphill battle given the left-wing lean of the state. Still, the widespread fraud that has taken place in Minnesota under Democrat rule has given Republicans a potentially winning issue.

Election day is Nov. 3.
