Gov. Tim Walz’s actions during the COVID-19 pandemic fit the dictionary definition of a dictatorship, Action4Liberty President Jake Duesenberg said Wednesday.

“If you look up in the Merriam-Webster dictionary what dictator is, the first thing it says is somebody that has absolute power under emergencies,” he said.

Gov. Walz announced new restrictions on bars and restaurants as well as private gatherings during a statewide address Tuesday.

Under the governor’s new orders, restaurants and bars are required to cut off in-person service by 10 p.m. Another provision in the executive order requires Minnesotans to limit private gatherings, indoors and outdoors, to 10 people and from no more than three households (regardless of the number of people).

“The idea that he can tell us who we are going to have at our house or how many people we’re going to have at our house is as extreme as it comes,” said Duesenberg.

“The point is: what are we going to do with this country? Are we going to continue this experiment with freedom? Are we going to do that? Or are we just going to be one person makes all the rules?” he continued. “My God, folks, you can’t sit on the sidelines on this one.”

Duesenberg said he’s hopeful that the Legislature will vote to end the governor’s emergency powers after newly-elected Republicans are sworn in. Over the course of several months, Duesenberg said his organization has successfully pressured five Democrats into voting in favor of terminating Walz’s emergency powers.
