A woman died and six others were injured in a mass shooting at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis Sunday night, according to police.

Police were dispatched to the park around 9:30 p.m. on reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they located a woman near 11th Avenue NE and Sibley Street NE suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. She was transported to Hennepin Healthcare, where she later died.

Police said six other victims were injured, including:

  • Two men who were transported by EMS to Hennepin Healthcare with gunshot wounds;
  • One man who was transported by EMS to North Memorial Medical Center with a gunshot wound;
  • Two men who arrived at area hospitals on their own—one at Hennepin Healthcare and one at North Memorial—both with gunshot wounds.
  • A woman who was transported by EMS to Hennepin Healthcare with minor injuries. She was not struck by gunfire.

Of the six injured, police say one of the men transported to Hennepin Healthcare suffered a life-threatening injury; the remaining five sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary information indicates that a large gathering at the park escalated into gunfire. Investigators are actively working to determine what led up to the shooting and are piecing together the sequence of events.

Officers secured the area, canvassed the neighborhood for evidence, and Minneapolis forensic scientists responded to process the scene. No arrests have been made.

“My thoughts are with all those who are affected by this outrageous act of violence,” said Chief Brian O’Hara. “The level of violence displayed in this shooting is absolutely sickening, and our investigators will work diligently to bring whoever is responsible to justice. We ask anyone who may know what happened to please provide any information they may have.”

During a press briefing Monday morning, Chief O’Hara said the woman who was not struck by gunfire was “possibly knocked unconscious in the melee that followed.”

He said there are “literally hundreds of pieces of evidence” that police are going through and are following up on several leads.

“We believe that there was more than one shooter here at this scene,” he added. “It’s more akin to a war zone, the amount of shell casings that the officers are recovering here, than something you would find in a park.”

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the deceased woman’s identity, as well as the official cause and manner of death.

Two people were also injured in a separate shooting Friday night outside Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota campus following a high school graduation ceremony.

This is a developing story.
