Earlier this month during a Live on Patrol broadcast, Ramsey County Undersheriff Mike Martin hinted at the potential for more Minneapolis police officers retiring following the approval of the Minneapolis police contract.

The contract will entail giving some officers backpay from 2023.

“They’re not only going to get that pay raise but their backpay they’ve been deserving,” Martin said. “Most of them went through the riots after the George Floyd incident, they’ve been through some really tough times.”

As of early June, only 493 officers were employed by the Minneapolis Police Department, down from over 900 in the beginning of May 2020, Alpha News journalist Liz Collin reported.

“I have a feeling that there’s some of the longer term officers that are going to retire now once they get their backpay,” Martin said.
