Commentary: Kamala Harris’ trip to Latin America was a disaster

Desperate families are not risking their lives for cooler weather or because Honduras lacks wind turbines.

Vice President Kamala Harris suffered a humiliating trip to Latin America this week. The so-called “border czar” traveled to Guatemala and Mexico City and — when not handing out cookies with her image — embarrassed our country every step of the way. This is not a partisan stance; even CNN admitted she had a bad few days.

When NBC’s Lester Holt pointed out that she has yet to visit the Mexico–United States border, the clueless veep got nervous and pulled out her insecure cackle, replying, “And I haven’t been to Europe. And I mean — I don’t understand the point that you’re making.”

Did I miss the migration problem coming out of Finland and Hungary? She was not christened Europe czar. Did it never occur to the vice president she’d be asked about her absence?

“Watching her work is to be reminded that she’s a terrible politician who talks absolute nonsense,” Charles Cooke said on a Tuesday podcast.

“All she has to do to fulfill this role is go to the border. Instead she’s turned an already weak argument — that this is not caused by the messages of progressives but other factors like climate change — into an even weaker argument by her sheer incompetence and inability to deliver a line or seem to care. It’s a real problem people care about and not going away and the Biden administration handed over the reigns to someone who’s unlikable and incompetent,” he continued.

Guatemalan president Alejandro Giammattei reminded everyone the current administration’s mixed messages are to blame for the northbound surge of migrants, saying when Biden took office, “The message changed to: ‘We’re going to reunite families, we’re going to reunite children.’ The very next day, the coyotes were here organizing groups of children to take them to the United States.”

Biden and Harris lambasted the Trump administration’s policies all summer and fall, promising to “roll back Trump’s accomplishments and reenact Obama-era policies.”

The new regime immediately ended the successful “Remain-in-Mexico” policy, which forced asylum-seekers to wait for their cases to be adjudicated in Mexico rather than being released into the United States. Now nearly half of those apprehended by Customs and Border Protection in recent months are set free.

Illegal border crossings have surpassed their highest level in decades — nearly 900,000 the last eight months —with several months still remaining.

More money is not a solution. We’ve thrown billions of dollars to Central America for decades with no decline in crime or corruption.

Needless to add, “climate change” is an irrelevant topic. Desperate families are not risking their lives for cooler weather or because Honduras lacks wind turbines. Poor people can’t worry about ancillary issues.

If Biden and Harris really had an interest in quelling the migrant surge, they would visit the southern border — as politicians from both sides of the aisle have — and talk directly to migrants, local law enforcement and especially border patrol to deduce how to provide security for those living in border towns.

Harris, who once claimed “an undocumented immigrant is not a criminal,” has no clue or interest. So ignorant and removed from reality, she called the simple idea a “grand gesture.”

During the campaign, Biden offered to suspend deportations and end family separations. In the first presidential debate two years ago, Biden and Harris vowed to give health care to illegal immigrants.

The administration’s failures will most hurt ordinary Americans dealing with the insidious consequences of unfettered illegal immigration. Ironically, the Democrats’ insouciance about solving this important issue is also hurting their party, which is losing Latino support.
