Attorney General Keith Ellison has yet to say a word about abuse allegations against Rep. John Thompson, who has been urged to resign by several DFL leaders including Gov. Tim Walz.
Thompson has a long history of alleged violence and domestic abuse against multiple women in the presence of children. Alpha News reported on Thompson’s abuse allegations in August of 2020 — before he was elected to public office — citing records that show Thompson was charged with domestic abuse and making terroristic threats in the early 2000s.
Now, DFL leaders including Walz, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, top legislative Democrats, and the chairman of the DFL Party have all asked Thompson to step down from his position as a state representative.
Ellison, however, has remained silent on the topic, perhaps because he has been in Thompson’s position.
Ellison was accused of abuse by his former girlfriend Karen Monahan in 2018 during his campaign for attorney general. Police records from a 911 call appear to show that Ellison was accused of abusing a different woman in 2005.
Monahan’s son first went public with the allegations in August 2018, claiming he witnessed a video of Ellison dragging Monahan off a bed by her feet and calling her a “fucking bitch.”
“What my son said is true. Every statement he made was true,” Monahan then wrote on Twitter the next day.

The DFL hired an attorney to conduct an investigation into the allegations, which found three friends who were able to corroborate Monahan’s accusations but concluded that the allegations were “unsubstantiated” because she wouldn’t release the video of the incident that she claimed to possess.
There were questions about the legitimacy of the investigation since it was conducted by the DFL Party attorney’s legal partner.
Ellison repeatedly denied the allegations.
Monahan tweeted her frustration with Minnesota leaders who have called for Thompson’s resignation but continued to support Ellison when she accused him of abuse, calling it “political theater.”
“You supported Keith after I broke my silence. Whatever works best in your interest, you will go either way,” Monahan wrote in a reply to Walz’s call for Thompson’s resignation.
