Matt Little, a former state senator, won the DFL endorsement in Minnesota’s Second Congressional District over the weekend. The district, which includes much of the Twin Cities’ south metro area, is considered Minnesota’s most competitive congressional seat.
“I’m honored to be the DFL endorsed candidate for CD2,” Little said. “We’re going to win big in November. We’re going to take on the greed and corruption that’s gutting working families. Enough is enough–let’s roll up our sleeves and win in November.”
Little was endorsed by the convention delegates on the first ballot, winning 63% of the vote. His DFL opponents were state Rep. Kaela Berg, who received 21% of the vote, and state Sen. Matt Klein, who received 14% of the vote.
Following the endorsing convention, Berg released a statement in which she announced she will run in the primary. Berg said “the future of our district should be decided by all voters, not behind closed doors by party elites.”
Klein does not appear to have released a public statement since the convention. Klein’s campaign has previously said he will run in the August primary.
At present, Klein and Little are the two leading fundraisers in the race for the Democratic nomination. According to the most recent campaign finance filings, Little has raised over $716,000 since announcing his candidacy and has over $400,000 in cash on hand.
Meanwhile, Klein’s campaign has raised $699,000 and has roughly $365,000 in cash on hand. Berg has raised more than $244,000 since the start of her campaign. All of those campaign finance filings are current through Q1 of this year, which ended on March 31.
On the Republican side, state Sen. Eric Pratt has already won the Republican endorsement and does not have a primary challenger. As such, Pratt will forgo a costly primary while his DFL counterparts are running in what could become a vicious primary campaign.
As of March 31, Pratt has raised $259,000 for his campaign and has roughly $199,000 in cash on hand.
The state primary election is scheduled for Aug. 11.
Minnesota’s Second Congressional District is currently represented by DFL Congresswoman Angie Craig. Last year, Craig announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate which kicked off a scramble to replace her in the DFL-leaning Second District.
For several election cycles, Minnesota’s Second District was characterized by expensive, close elections. Several of the district’s recent elections were decided by roughly five points or fewer. However, Craig won by more than 13 points in 2024.
