(Center of the American Experiment) — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has released its migration data for 2021-2022. It showed a net loss of 13,455 individuals from Minnesota to other parts of the United States.
Figure 1 shows where they went and where they came from. We see that the major sources for Minnesota’s gains of residents were either even higher tax states like California, Illinois, and New York, or neighbors, like North Dakota and Iowa. The main destinations for fleeing Minnesotans were low (no) tax states, Florida and Texas, and our neighbors, Wisconsin.

Minnesota’s net loss of residents was its second largest in at least three decades, after only 2020-2021, as Figure 2 shows.

We hear a lot about Minnesota’s labor shortage. One cause of that is our ongoing loss of residents to other parts of the United States.
