The Minneapolis Police Department is projected to have 1.1 million dollars cut from its funding after the City changed its 2020 budget.
The decrease in funding comes after a projected 156 million dollar deficit prompted the City Council to create a new budget plan for 2020. Included in the changes is a shift of 1.1 million from the police department to the Health Department for “violence prevention efforts.”
Many Minnesota Republicans have expressed their disapproval of the change.

In addition to taking funds away from the police, the City Council has removed the role of Police Information Officer in an attempt to “increase trust,” according to Police1.
Though the Department’s funding dropped by less than 1% and still remains at 13% of the City’s 1.6 billion dollar budget, armed citizen patrols have been reported to combat the recently increased crime rate.
In addition to other changes, the City will spend $100,000 for costs related to a permanent memorial for George Floyd.
