Former DFL state senator Nicole Mitchell is preparing to run for Woodbury City Council. The move comes less than one year after she resigned from the Minnesota Senate following her conviction for burglarizing her stepmother’s home.

According to a campaign website run by Mitchell, the former DFL state senator is asking donors to make checks payable to “Nicole Mitchell for City Council.” The campaign website also says it is “Prepared and paid for by Nicole Mitchell for Woodbury City Council.”

Her campaign website also links to an ActBlue page with a “Nicole Mitchell Woodbury City Council” logo.

While Mitchell has not formally announced her candidacy yet, her website makes clear she is preparing for another bid for office. The candidate filing period for Woodbury City Council opens on July 14. Two Woodbury City Council seats are up for election this November.

Mitchell previously represented Woodbury and parts of Maplewood in the Senate. She was elected to that body in 2022 but resigned in August of 2025 after she was found guilty of first-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Mitchell’s burglary conviction stemmed from an April 2024 incident in which Mitchell broke into her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes home in the early morning hours.

During her trial, Mitchell’s defense team argued that Mitchell was in the home to perform a welfare check on her stepmother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The prosecution argued that Mitchell was there to steal items belonging to her late father.

After her felony conviction, Mitchell resigned from the Senate and was sentenced to six months in jail and five years of supervised probation. According to her sentencing order, Mitchell was ordered to report to jail in October of 2025. She was released from jail in January.

Mitchell is currently appealing her case before the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Alpha News contacted Mitchell’s campaign for this story but but did not hear back. To be a candidate for Woodbury City Council, a candidate must reside in the city for at least 30 days before the general election, be 21 or older upon assuming office, and be an eligible voter.

In Minnesota, convicted felons can vote as long as they are not currently incarcerated.

Earlier this week, Alpha News was told that Mitchell was elected as the new president of the parent-teacher organization (PTO) for Middleton Elementary School in Woodbury. Mitchell, who attended Woodbury schools as a child, has two young sons.

Alpha News contacted the Middleton Elementary PTO for this story but did not hear back prior to publication.
