President Trump nominates former Anoka County sheriff for Minnesota US Marshal

The other candidate was Bob Kroll, the former president of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis.

James Stuart/Anoka County

President Donald Trump has nominated James Stuart for the position of U.S. Marshal for the District of Minnesota. Stuart, a former Anoka County Sheriff, was recommended for the post by Minnesota’s Republican congressional delegation.

“We thank President Trump for nominating one of our recommended candidates, Sheriff James Stuart, as the U.S. Marshal for the District of Minnesota. James served in law enforcement for thirty years and experienced firsthand the importance of strong law and order policies,” said Reps. Tom Emmer, Pete Stauber, Michelle Fischbach, and Brad Finstad in a joint statement.

Stuart was elected Anoka County Sheriff in 2010 and won reelection in 2014 and 2018. He chose not to seek reelection in 2022. Prior to his service as sheriff, Stuart was a deputy in the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.

Since 2023, Stuart has served as the executive director and CEO of the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association. He was one of two recommended U.S. Marshal candidates put forward by the GOP members of Congress. The other candidate was Bob Kroll, the former president of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis (POFM).

Kroll was endorsed for the U.S. Marshal position by the POFM and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA).

Should Stuart be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, he will become Minnesota’s U.S. Marshal for a four-year term. The U.S. Marshals Service is tasked with many responsibilities such as arresting federal fugitives, transferring federal prisoners, and protecting the federal courts system.

“Sheriff Stuart will support and implement President Trump’s successful crime crackdown as our U.S. Marshal. As criminals, gangs, and fraudsters wreak havoc in Tim Walz’s Minnesota, we urge the Senate to move quickly to confirm James’ nomination,” added the Republican congressional delegation.
