Weekend shootings in Minneapolis leave one dead, several injured

Separate weekend shootings hours apart Saturday to Sunday in Minneapolis left one person dead and two others injured, in addition to injuries in other shootings on Friday night and early Monday.

Just before 10 p.m. Saturday, first responders were dispatched to Bossen Field on the 5700 block of 28th Avenue South on a report of a shooting. Initial available emergency audio indicated possibly more than one person had been shot. However, just one female was transported to the hospital by EMS after being shot in the hand and head, according to available audio. Police later confirmed to media that the woman had been responsive prior to being taken to the hospital. Her updated condition was not immediately available.

Hours later, just after 1 a.m. Sunday, first responders were dispatched to a person shot in the parking lot of the Wedge Co-op at 2105 Lyndale Avenue South. Available emergency audio indicated that a male was shot in the back and CPR was in progress.

Police released a statement later Sunday stating that the shooting was being investigated as a homicide and that another man had shown up at an area hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound, potentially in connection to the same shooting.

Police said preliminary information indicated that a group was in a parking lot in the area when another group began shooting at them. Homicide investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting.

In a prior shooting late Friday night, an injured party showed up at Abbott Hospital in south Minneapolis before 11:30 p.m., according to the MPD 911 dashboard. Details in that shooting were not immediately available, but there had been two Shotspotter activations just prior: one on the 300 block of E 36th Street, and another near 28th and Bloomington Avenue. It’s unknown if the Shotspotter activations were connected to the shooting.

In yet another shooting, about 12:30 a.m. Monday, multiple people were shot in Northeast Minneapolis near East Hennepin Avenue and University Avenue Northeast, according to available dispatch audio and the MPD 911 dashboard. CPR was reported to be in progress on one party, while another other party was reportedly transported to the hospital by a squad.

In a statement, a department public information officer said MPD and University of Minnesota officers responded to the report of a shooting and located a man outside with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds.

“Officers provided immediate medical aid. The man was transported by ambulance to Hennepin Healthcare,” the statement said. “Two additional men with apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wounds arrived at Hennepin Healthcare approximately 10 minutes after the shooting was reported.”

Preliminary information from 911 callers indicated that multiple rounds of gunfire were heard and several people were seen running from the area, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, Crime Watch Minneapolis learned from a source that the Minneapolis Police Department was struggling to fill Sunday patrol shifts. In a memo to officers reviewed by Crime Watch, officers were asked to help fill partial or full shifts “in ANY precinct” they wanted on Sunday. The source told Crime Watch that as of Saturday, about 72 shifts needed to be filled for Sunday.

The department public information officer said he is “unaware of any staffing issues but will look into it.”
