Commentary: As border tragedies continue, blame Team Biden

Team Biden unequivocally deserves blame.

When he learned about 53 illegal migrants dying while being smuggled through San Antonio, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott argued that President Joe Biden’s liberal border policies and ineptitude are responsible.

Generally, hyperbole and casting blame after a horrible tragedy aren’t necessary — despicable smugglers who rape little girls are directly responsible for the tragedy, as are corrupt countries from which these desperate people flee — but Team Biden unequivocally deserves blame. Much like the Afghanistan debacle, when the hapless administration’s decisions effectively invited illegal immigrants to pour into America, did Biden expect lollipops and butterflies?

“They have incentives to come across because they know they won’t get deported back. When you create an open border, you empower the cartels,” Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw said Wednesday. “The only way to fix this is to start enforcing the law and deporting people back, because that creates the disincentives we need to fix the crisis.”

It’s been documented that Biden’s 2020 victory became the impetus for a rush toward the Mexico-U.S. border. Potential immigrants wanted the Trump administration gone and tone deaf Democrats back in power.

On his first day in office, Biden suspended his predecessor’s “Remain in Mexico” program — which the Supreme Court officially ended Thursday —  and paused deportations. Two weeks later, he shut down sensible agreements with key Central American countries aimed at reducing asylum seekers, and recently he was bailed out on the unwise Title 42 revocation.

Since inauguration, the Biden administration has released more than 1 million illegal border-crossers into the country. That doesn’t include the people Border Patrol missed because agents were tied up with bureaucratic nonsense.

As all of this occurs, the incorrigible White House press secretary laughably claims “the border is closed.”

We know Karine Jean-Pierre is a repugnant stooge, but a record number of illegal-immigrants crossed the Rio Grande in May. And though nearly half were sent back via Title 42 orders, that means they now require noxious smugglers to sneak them past the Border Patrol.

“This is totally preventable,” former Rep. Jason Chaffetz recently told Fox News. “For the White House spokesperson to say they’re focused on this, Joe Biden has never been. Kamala Harris is supposedly the southern border czar [but] has done absolutely nothing. And that’s not just me making these comments; it’s the Border Patrol themselves. Why won’t senior officials take time to meet and talk with agents trying to do this job?”

Biden’s border policies are cruel; they entice vulnerable people with promises of peace, security, and no deportation, once they make it into the U.S. The only rational, caring people on this issue are Republicans, border hawks, and our heroic Border Patrol agents. Left-wing elites like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren, sitting in air conditioning around Washington, D.C., pontificating balderdash, are the true heedless bigots.

We can resolve this issue with consistent enforcement policies at the border and within the U.S., so that when a prospective immigrant weighs the chance of success in breaking the law, he will conclude it’s not worth the risk and expense. Only then can we say Biden isn’t contributing to these tragedies.
