A new statewide poll shows Gov. Tim Walz’s approval rating is underwater. The poll also shows that most Minnesotans believe the state is on the wrong track and a majority of political independents feel the same way.
Conducted by The Tarrance Group from May 13-17, the new poll surveyed 500 likely Minnesota voters and had a margin of error of 4.5%. The Tarrance Group has previously conducted polls for state Republican parties, governors, and members of Congress.
The new poll was shared exclusively with Alpha News.
According to the survey, 43.4% of respondents said they either approve or strongly approve of the job Walz is doing as governor. Meanwhile, 52.4% of those surveyed said they disapprove or strongly disapprove of Walz’s job performance.

When asked if the next governor should “be as much like Tim Walz as possible,” only 32.6% of respondents agreed while 63.5% disagreed. The remaining 3.9% of those polled were unsure.
The Tarrance Group poll also asked likely voters about the direction of Minnesota.
According to the poll, 14.9% of respondents “strongly” felt that Minnesota is going in the right direction. Additionally, 24.4% “somewhat” felt that Minnesota is going in the right direction. In total, 39.2% indicated that the state is trending in the right direction.
Conversely, 9.3% of respondents “somewhat” felt that Minnesota is on the wrong track. Meanwhile, 44.4% “strongly” felt that Minnesota is on the wrong track. In total, the poll showed that 53.6% of those surveyed said the state is on the wrong track.
Of those polled, 7.1% were undecided about the state’s direction.
When broken down by party, 4% of Republicans indicated that Minnesota is on the right track while 79% of Democrats expressed the same. Meanwhile, 93% of Republicans indicated the state is on the wrong track while 14% of Democrats said the same.
Among independents, 35% said Minnesota is on the right track, 53% said the state is on the wrong track, and 11% were undecided.
