An inmate fled from deputies Sunday when he was being prepared for transport, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement to Alpha News.

Billy Mason, 46, fled on foot just before 2 p.m. through an open security garage door of the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility. He was handcuffed with a waistbelt at the time, the sheriff’s office said.

“Mason had been conditionally released on a Hennepin County warrant but was being transported for a warrant out of Ramsey County. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is utilizing all available resources including law enforcement partners to locate Mason. When Mason came into custody, he reported no permanent residence,” the statement continued.

“Our detectives are investigating all leads, and we are also seeking the public’s help. If anyone is aware of Mason’s location or has information related to his whereabouts, please call 911. Our office is investigating this situation and looking at every step that led up to it to determine any corrective action. Police said Mason is a white male who weighs 249 pounds and is 5’10’’ tall. He has brown hair and brown eyes and was wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans, and black shoes at the time of the incident.

Jail records show he was initially in Hennepin County’s custody on domestic abuse and disorderly conduct charges.
