Keith Ellison Suggests GOP Suppresses Voters

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) suggested Republicans want to suppress voters in a tweet on Sunday.

Ellison frequently shares his progressive views on Twitter, much of which is directed towards Republicans. This time Ellison turned his attention to voter suppression, responding to a tweet that implies the GOP actively works to keep voters away from the polls.

“If voting didn’t matter, the GOP wouldn’t be working so hard to prevent people from doing it,” a Twitter user wrote in response to one of Ellison’s tweets.

“Yep. Thanks for sharing it,” Ellison responded.

Ellison has previously accused the Republicans of suppressing voters. Voter ID laws have been a main point of contention for several years. These laws, if enacted, would require a government-issued ID to be shown before being allowed to cast votes.

In 2016 Ellison shared an article claiming that Republicans are more likely to support voter ID laws if they live in an area with a larger minority population. Ellison contended this was “proof” that voter ID laws were an attempt to keep people of color from voting.

“More proof of Republicans using race to suppress POC votes. Read before you judge,” he tweeted, then providing a link to an article.

More recently Ellison tweeted that Florida “purged black voters” in order to elect former President George W. Bush.

“We’ve got to ask who benefits from all this racism. Who loses? All of us! Because Florida purged black voters, the whole country got George Bush, which led us into war and enriched big pharma,” said Ellison, quoting another article. “This happened to everyone of every color. Racism helps elites control everyone else.”
