A Mound woman with a steady stream of at least 30 prior felony convictions for crimes stretching back to 1993, and who received stayed sentences on the most recent three of those convictions – the latest in October – is back in custody and facing new felony charges.
Jody Ann Cary’s thirty-one Minnesota convictions include 30 felonies: eight for financial transaction card fraud; eight for check or other forgery; five for second-degree burglary of schools, churches or government buildings; three for identity theft; three for narcotics; two for motor vehicle theft or attempt; and one for terroristic threats.
Some of the cases contain multiple felony convictions and nearly every conviction involves the dismissal of other felony charges.
The cases span Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, Dakota, Carver, Scott, Sherburne and Goodhue counties.
Despite her lengthy and widespread conviction history, Cary’s most recent conviction for felony narcotics in Anoka County in October was stayed by Judge Dyanna L. Street, as were two other recent felony convictions for auto theft in Sherburne County and second-degree burglary in Carver County, both in 2015.
Most of the remainder of Cary’s felony convictions were ordered to be served concurrently with other convictions even though they were separate crime incidents and often in separate counties.
Twenty-five years ago, Cary claimed that an abusive boyfriend made her steal; a claim she made while recovering in the hospital in 1995 after being hit in the head with a hammer by the boyfriend, who subsequently spent just over 10 years in prison for the assault.
The abuse claim was revisited in a 2010 report after Cary was facing felony charges for stealing wallets from churches in the east metro. The same report stated that Cary had also previously been civilly committed for mental illness. Court records show that Cary has been civilly committed three times, most recently in 2010 for six months. Cary has had sixteen felony convictions since being released from her last civil commitment in 2010.
NEW CHARGES
Cary was arrested in Dakota County on Jan. 12 after Eagan police were dispatched to a shoplifting report. According to a criminal complaint filed last week, officers arrived at the store where employees had Cary detained and reported that she was observed stealing jewelry and clothing. Cary subsequently told officers that she entered the store intending to steal items. Officers performed a search of Cary’s person and found stolen merchandise, a magnet used to remove store security tags, and a baggie in Cary’s bra containing a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine residue.
Cary, 46, has been charged with two felony counts of possession of burglary tools and fifth-degree controlled substance and one misdemeanor count of theft in the case. Cary, 46, remains in custody in Dakota County Jail on $10,000 bail and is scheduled to make her next court appearance on March 5.
